Goggles by Shao-Feng Hsu
4 color Risograph print, 11×17, edition of 100

Goggles came from those swims—from the quiet disorientation of being underwater. That thin pocket of air between my eyes and the lenses lets me see what’s beneath the surface. Light refracts through water, splitting into a spectrum of colors. It reminds me there are always other ways of seeing—other ways of receiving the world.

Inspired by my mentor Darin Mickey, I’ve been experimenting with the trichrome process—one of the earliest methods of creating color photographs using B&W film.

This return to color is part of a broader reflection on transitions:

From San Francisco to Oakland.

From fog into light.

Photography is a medium that holds time—whether in a fraction of a second, the quiet hours spent in the kitchen, or long exposures that stretch across years.” -Shao-Feng Hsu
